TEC Successes
From 1995 to the present, TEC has significantly influenced the commercialization of more than a hundred technologies. Some of these enabling technologies were strong enough to warrant the creation of several new technology companies. Companies that were created or significantly assisted by TEC have attracted over $119 Million of investment capital and have positively impacted the triangle economy by creating jobs and giving international recognition to companies started and operated in North Carolina.

LipoScience, (formerly LipoMed, Inc.), based in Raleigh, NC, is a diagnostic testing and analytical company that is pioneering medical applications of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. Founded on June 14, 1994, by James D. Otvos, Ph.D., LipoScience was formed to assist clinicians and researchers in their fight against America's number one killer, heart disease. www.liposcience.com
Knowledge Sharing Systems, (KSS) based in Raleigh, NC, is a patent management software system that enables IP attorneys and technology managers manage their company's intellectual property through the patent and licensing process, and track royalty payments. Intronn, developed and patented a new technology for gene therapy that exploits the differential gene expression between normal and diseased cells. In 2002, Intronn moved its operations from Centennial Campus on NC State in Raleigh, NC to Gaithersburg, Maryland. www.intronn.com
LIPSinc was a TEC success. The company was a 'Rich Media' company based upon lip-synchronization software. The company was formed in 1998 for the highly anticipated new market involving live interactive animations embedded in customer service applications. In the end, the market never materialized so the company closed its doors in 2002. In the end, the company had raised nearly $10 million.
